The Driveby ID

I asked the female cop if I can at least throw some clothes on instead of walking out to the front with just a towel on. I can only imagine what they neighbors are already thinking. I'm sure they are all out in their front yards gossiping since there are about 6 cop cars and an ambulance out there.

I grab shorts and t-shirt and walk with the deputy towards the front. The whole time I'm asking a million questions. "What time did this attempted rape happen?", "How far away was it?".. all kinds of things. She answered some of questions in between trying to 'calm' me down.

"Miss, lets just get you over to the EMT's so they can check you out. Just calm down.. everything will be O.K."

She was really starting to piss me off because she wasn't listening to a damn word I was saying. She thought I was getting hysterical (have you ever looked up where the word hysterical came from? I suggest you do if you want a good laugh.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Female_hysteria)

Anyway.. she thought I was getting hysterical because of what they 'thought' he had done to me. I finally stopped walking so she'd look at me and explained myself again. This time I made her listen to me. I explained the events of the night.. from the time he got to my place until they showed up. I explained that what they saw was consensual... no way was he raping me. She finally looked like she was starting to understand me and asked if I would repeat what I said to the officers out front.

***************************************************************************

When we arrived out front Mr. Just Breaks was already in the car. The look he gave me was a mixture of fear, confusion and anger. I can't blame him.. I'd feel the same way. The female cop called a few of the other officers over and asked if I would repeat what I had told her and I did. They all looked at me like they didn't believe me.

They were really starting to piss me off.

To break the silence, I recommended them to check his car and my car to prove that it hadn't been driven in awhile. The hood shouldn't be hot proving that either vehicle hadn't been driven in at least 2 hrs. 1 officer was given the task while the rest just stood around and watched, waiting for a sign. He came back and reported that both hoods were indeed not hot but that it still didn't prove he hadn't done it.

These cops were really starting to get on my nerves! What did I have to do to prove to them he couldn't have done it!?! They excused themselves so they could talk and asked if I would let the EMT's check me out. I declined stating that I had no injuries and didn't need it... that they could send them off. The cops didn't seem happy, they still didn't believe me. I know in that line of work many people will lie for others, but that's not me. But.. they didn't know that.

I lit a cigarette while scanning the street. Only 1 neighbor had come out to walk his dog, so that was good. However, it HAD to be the neighbor that was the street's gossiper. He always knew what was going on and loved to tell everyone about it. I knew I had to talk to him before he spread it all over... especially to my parents.

Before I had a chance to go over and talk to him, a few of the cops came back to inform me that they were going to do a 'driveby' line up. They were having another officer drive the victim by to see if she would ID Mr. Just Breaks as the guy that broke into her house and try to rape her.

It was't long before they were bringing him back out of the car, standing at the curb with just a towel on. I saw the cop car slowly driving down my street and I held my breath. Even though I was 99.99% sure it wasn't him, there was still a small part of me that was doubting what I knew. Could I have gotten the times wrong? Could they have? Did he really have time to do before coming over??

The car approached slowly. The cop said something to her.. she paused.. said something back.. the cop replied.. she shook her head yes and they drove off.

I just stood there. Did she really just nod her head yes?? What did that mean? Oh GOD! What did he do?? What was I thinking bringing him here? I didn't even know him? Could that have been me???
